“remember you will die”
The themes of mortality, impermanence, and remembrance in art are so pervasive that an artist need only include symbolic shorthand to allude to the march of time and inevitability of death; a skull, burning candle, hourglass, or wilted flower. Throughout history we have used jewelry to honor the dead, display our grief, and remember those we’ve lost. We pass jewelry down generations to remember our ancestors, bury people with jewelry, and wear mourning jewelry depicting a lover’s eye, enclosing a lock of hair, or keeping a photograph close to the heart. More recently we’ve seen memento mori as a call to adventure and a caution against regret; not a stoic meditation on the transient nature of existence, but an exuberant declaration: You only live once! This exhibition comprises the work of 34 contemporary jewelry artists and metalsmiths. Some artists have shared deeply personal work rooted in both cultural histories and specific experiences of loss and grief, yet there is still room for mirth when contemplating the absurd unknowability of death. Enjoy the show and remember! You will die. yolo baby

This dimensional biography of renowned jeweler Robert Ebendorf features a selection of works from the artist alongside the students and mentors who helped to embolden his wildly original practice of transforming found and natural objects into incredible adornments.
Comprised of wall pieces and wearables from some of Ebendorf’s closest confidants and long-term admirers, Ebendorf & The Usual Suspects provides a unique glimpse into the still-prolific practice of a veteran jeweler whose work has taken him across the globe, from humble beginnings in Topeka, Kansas to the frigid fjords of Norway where the artist completed his first Fulbright Fellowship.

Join us for a talk with metalsmith, enamelist, and book artist Barbara McFadyen!
Barbara has been producing unique, wearable forms for over four decades in precious metals, stones, and vitreous enamel. Much of her work focuses on humankind’s relationship with nature, a subject she explores in her jewelry and unique artists’ books. Her version of nature is filtered and transformed by her awareness of diverse cultural traditions – in particular she has an affinity to the art of Japan and aesthetic of shibusa which, she feels, embodies an inimitable, subtle, and unobtrusive beauty as well as a deep connection to the flux of nature.
In this talk, Barbara will talk about her work, her processes, and her inspirations as she creates her intricate, layered, and beautiful work.
She was first introduced to enameling at Kulicke-Stark Academy in New York and later continued studies with master enamelists Bill Helwig, Martha Banyas, Jamie Bennett, Linda Darty, and Mi-Sook Hur. Barbara has both a BA and MFA and has been working with enamels for over 40 years. A nationally recognized and award winning artist, her work can be found in museums throughout the US and she has exhibited internationally.
“My inspirations, thought, and emotions are deeply connected to the natural world; they have been nourished by observing, gathering, and exploring nature throughout the seasons, a practice continued since my childhood. I believe the sense of awe invoked by observing the untamed beauty of nature can remind us of our place in the world and reconnect us to a level of meaning that lies beneath all the distractions and demands of the everyday. Through my work I seek to capture treasured memories, reflections of nature’s beauty, and moments of tranquility into lasting objects or personal adornments.”
